Duration: Initial up to 12 months with extension options of up to 24 months in total

Working arrangements: Hybrid – On-site for the first 6 weeks before hybrid flexible working arrangements may be considered, unless otherwise negotiated. Candidates must reside within reasonable travelling distance of the nominated office location to attend on-site when required.

Description:

Our client is seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to lead the design, development, testing and maintenance of complex enterprise software applications.

The successful candidate will provide technical leadership across software development activities, delivering scalable, secure and maintainable solutions using Java, Spring Boot, Angular and related technologies.

The role involves working within Agile delivery teams, providing specialist technical advice, resolving complex development challenges and ensuring software solutions meet established development, security and quality standards.

The Senior Java Developer will also contribute to application modernisation, system integration, production support and continuous improvement initiatives while mentoring junior developers and collaborating with technical and business stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and maintain back-end services using Java, Spring Boot and related frameworks.

  • Build responsive, dynamic and accessible front-end interfaces using modern frameworks, including Angular.

  • Develop clean, maintainable and testable code in accordance with software engineering best practices.

  • Lead technical analysis, solution design, development, prototyping, unit testing and maintenance activities.

  • Provide specialist technical advice on software development, system integration and application maintenance.

  • Lead the design, development and delivery of Java-based enterprise solutions.

  • Undertake technical design and development of complex custom solutions, including system conversion and migration activities.

  • Manage application releases, production deployments and ongoing application support.

  • Perform high-level analysis of technical requirements and recommend appropriate solutions.

  • Identify, investigate and resolve complex technical issues across development and production environments.

  • Conduct code reviews and promote continuous improvement in software quality and maintainability.

  • Support development teams in delivering solutions aligned with endorsed software development methodologies.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring and knowledge transfer to less experienced developers.

  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support project delivery and operational requirements.

  • Take ownership of technical delivery outcomes and ensure compliance with relevant development and security standards.

Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in Java development.

  • Minimum 5 years experience in the technologies listed in the job specification.

  • Strong experience in front-end technologies including JSP, JQuery and JavaScript.

  • Experience with Spring, IBM DB2, JPA, web service standards, RESTful services and JMS.

  • Proven experience delivering IT solutions using software development lifecycle, systems development and testing methodologies within Agile environments.

  • Ability to develop technical documentation and experience working with technical integration frameworks.

  • Highly developed communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in information technology, software engineering, computer science or equivalent industry experience.

  • Demonstrated understanding of enterprise software development lifecycle practices, quality assurance and release management.

  • Ability to obtain Australian Government Baseline security clearance.

Essential Criteria:

  • Demonstrated senior experience designing, developing, testing and maintaining enterprise Java/J2EE/Angular applications, including Spring Boot, REST APIs, integration services and relational databases.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in Agile delivery teams, provide technical leadership, undertake code reviews, resolve complex defects and transfer knowledge to APS staff.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Senior level experience with Spring Boot, microservices, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, DevOps tooling or containerised deployment patterns.

  • Experience working with Australian Government systems, security requirements, accessibility standards or large-scale service delivery platforms.

  • Experience supporting application maintenance and support activities for critical business systems.

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with business, technical and operational stakeholders.
