Description:
Our client is seeking an experienced Azure Cloud Application Architect / Technical Lead to play a pivotal role in the modernisation of a large-scale application into a scalable, secure and maintainable Azure cloud-native platform.
Working under the direction of the Solution Architect, you will translate high-level solution architecture into detailed application designs while providing hands-on technical leadership across development and engineering teams. You will bridge architecture and engineering, ensuring complex cloud-native solutions are delivered as robust, production-ready systems.
The role operates across a diverse technology landscape, including legacy C++ components, Azure PaaS/SaaS services, Azure Databricks, full-stack web applications and modern cloud-native architectures.
Responsibilities:
- Validate and refine application and component-level designs derived from Solution Architect direction, ensuring alignment with overall platform architecture.
- Translate high-level solution architecture into detailed, implementable application designs suited to Azure cloud-native environments.
- Act as a hands-on implementer of architectural patterns, ensuring design intent is consistently realised in delivery outcomes.
- Ensure architecture artefacts are practical, optimised and fit-for-purpose within the target cloud-native platform.
- Provide informed technical input into design decisions, trade-offs and feasibility, escalating issues where required.
- Collaborate closely with the Solution Architect to bridge gaps between conceptual design and detailed implementation.
- Ensure consistency and integration across application layers, services, interfaces and supporting data platforms.
- Identify, assess and address technical risks, constraints and optimisation opportunities throughout implementation.
- Actively contribute to development of core components, including C#/.NET services, APIs, Python data workflows and front-end elements (Angular) where required.
- Provide code-level leadership through peer reviews, technical guidance and mentoring to development team members.
- Support integration and refactoring of legacy C++ model components into modern cloud-native application architectures.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, including performance bottlenecks and architectural trade-offs.
- Collaborate with the Lead Data Engineer to support data pipelines, services and analytical workflows aligned with data architecture and warehousing principles.
- Ensure effective use of Azure Databricks, Data Lake and SQL platforms.
- Promote and support DevOps practices, including CI/CD implementation, branching strategies and automated deployment pipelines.
- Ensure solutions meet quality, security and compliance requirements, including secure coding, identity integration, logging and comprehensive testing practices.
- Provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary teams, fostering collaboration, mentoring staff and uplifting overall team capability.
Requirements:
- Demonstrated experience designing enterprise application architectures.
- Ability to translate high-level solution architecture into detailed Azure cloud-native application designs.
- Strong hands-on software engineering experience using C#/.NET, Python and Angular.
- Experience designing and implementing Azure cloud-native solutions using microservices and event-driven architectures.
- Experience with Azure Databricks, Azure Data Lake and SQL-based data platforms.
- Strong understanding of DevOps practices, including Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code.
- Experience working across legacy and cloud-native environments.
- Ability to provide technical leadership, mentoring and architectural guidance.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and stakeholder engagement skills.
Key Capabilities:
- Enterprise application architecture
- Azure cloud-native solution design
- Technical leadership and mentoring
- Software engineering using C#/.NET, Python and Angular
- Azure Databricks and data engineering
- DevOps and CI/CD implementation
- Legacy system modernisation
- Secure application design and delivery
- Cross-functional collaboration and stakeholder engagement
Essential Criteria:
- Demonstrated ability to design and implement enterprise application architectures as well as translate high-level solution designs into implementable patterns, components and services. Strong ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly as well as influence and drive stakeholder consensus.
- Strong hands-on software engineering skills in C#/.NET, Python and modern web Frameworks (Angular), with experience applying SOLID principles, clean architecture and building secure, testable APIs and applications.
- Demonstrated experience designing and delivering Azure cloud-native solutions using microservices, scalability and event-driven patterns, and core services (compute, storage, networking, monitoring, identity).
- Demonstrated capability in data engineering, including designing and supporting data pipelines and models using Azure Databricks, Data Lake and SQL-based platforms. Familiarity with data warehousing techniques and integrating data across distributed systems, with a willingness to further deepen expertise in this area as part of the role.
- Experience implementing DevOps practices using Azure DevOps, including CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (e.g. Terraform), Repos and automated build and release processes.
- Ability to lead delivery across integrated legacy and cloud-native systems and deal with cross-system dependencies and complexity. Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills focused on delivering practical, implementable solutions.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience working with scientific modelling or geospatial systems.
